The Troy Community Networking Project is a community directed
Internet initiative that integrates art, culture, and technology.
The Troy Community Networking Project is currently developing an
electronic community network, including a Web-based demonstration
component called TroyNet, undertaken by faculty, staff, and students
at
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and guided by business people,
community organizations, and civic leaders in the City of Troy, New
York.
The Community Networking Project and TroyNet seek to promote economic
and social growth in the Troy community through development of its rich
cultural and architectural heritage and its art, technology, and
education resources. To support this effort, Rensselaer faculty Jim
Zappen and Teri Harrison offer a course titled Web Design for Community
Networking, in which students develop web modules promoting Troy's
economic and social assets. Students research their topics, consult
with clients in the Troy community, and design and build webs for
TroyNet.
The project has received support from Academic Computing Services,
the
Department of Language, Literature, and Communication, and the School
of Humanities and Social Sciences at Rensselaer; the Intel Corporation;
and the MapInfo Corporation.
The Troy Community Networking Project seeks to promote cultural
exchange between and among representatives of the arts, technology,
and
education within its own community. It also seeks to promote the
development of local communities everywhere through the use of
electronic communication technologies. Toward that end, it invites and
encourages interchange of ideas with other community networking
projects nationally and internationally.
